PsychoTactile Therapy

About PsychoTactile Therapy

PsychoTactile Therapy approaches 90% of all physical and mental problems as primarily nervous system disruptions. This fits in with the very latest neuroscience and with the most neurologically informed healing practices.

Addressing our complaints as historical nervous system disruptions makes treatment remarkably simple – we need to “talk to the nervous system” and use techniques that allow your body and mind to ‘re-wire’ itself. We can do this by bringing together the two disciplines of psychotherapy and touch healing into a simple but obvious synthesis that brings together the very best of both fields.

About Trauma

We all carry trauma, but some of us are carrying more than we realise. One of the ways we know it is likely we are carrying more trauma than our nervous system can cope with is because we are experiencing the following sorts of problems:

  • Tense or tight muscles
  • Digestive problems
  • Circulation problems
  • Chronic pain
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Teeth grinding
  • Addictions
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Anger issues
  • Over-reacting
  • Easily startled
  • Metabolic problems
  • Weakened immunity
  • Depression/anxiety
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Loss of libido
  • Breathing problems
  • Spacing out/disconnection from others

The PsychoTactile Session

Each psychotactile session will begin with some talking about the use of Touch. Each session lasts an hour. It is important to allow at least an hour between the end of each session and any driving as the session quite literally ‘floods’ the brain with healing chemicals and this can create a slightly ‘woozy’ effect for a short while. This is one way that you can actually feel the touch element doing its bio-chemical work in the brain.

The Frequency of Sessions

These happen in ‘cycles’ of 4. We do three face-to-face sessions within a 24 hour period. This gives your BodyMind time to integrate the first sessions overnight, through sleep and dreaming. This generally means we have a double session on the first day and then a morning follow up session the next morning. Three weeks after these sessions we will do a Skype call to monitor your progress and assess your future needs. Most people only need one or two of these ‘cycles’ to resolve the problem. This is because the intensity of the sessions combined with the neurological impact of the touch seems to “reach the parts other therapies cannot reach”.

Why is Touch so important?

Touch is simply the most direct way to access the trauma centres of the brain. Recent research has shown that certain types of touch stimulate nerves that travel much more slowly than our other sensory nerves, and that these nerves go straight to the trauma centres of the brain. This means that these ‘soothing nerves’ are replacing pain with pleasure in the brain receptors. There is also evidence that this change is permanent. Having spent 35 years witnessing the soothing effects on the minds and bodies of my clients, I can also say that the research is only scratching the tip of the iceberg of measuring the manifold benefits of touch to the nervous system and brain.

What sort of Touch is used?

In the same way that the nervous system knows that we are NOT safe if we are attacked and hit, so the nervous system knows UNEQUIVOCALLY when we are SAFE if we are touched gently and safely. Touch is the most primal of all our senses and this is why it carries direct and instant communication to the safety areas of our brain and nervous system.  Touch is much more than just a handshake or a hug and certain types of speed and depth of touch convey SAFETY, SECURITY and SOOTHING more powerfully than others. For touch to be safe, it has to be in your control and you must be safe with it.This is why the nerves that carry the soothing effects of the right kind of touch arrive in the brain a good TWO SECONDS after all the other sensory nerves have fed their information to the brain about our environment. If the message from all those other (much quicker) sensory nerves is “No Safety” then the soothing touch will either be ignored or interpreted as a threat by the brain. In other words, touch carries different meanings in different contexts for different people. For this reason, there is ABSOLUTELY NO TOUCH until you have decided just which areas of the body you are happy to be touched and what type of touch you are happy to receive and for how long.   You remain totally in charge of what touch takes place throughout a PsychoTactile session, which is one of the reasons it works so deeply and so powerfully. This is because we all have very different ‘touch histories’ and touch associations. Every one of us requires different types of touch for soothing our nervous system. Everyone is different.

How much does it cost?
